Around 17 hours ago, Mt. Gox, the world-renowned Bitcoin exchange service, reported suffering a downtime. After investigating the source of the issue, MtGox.com representatives have determined that the disruption was caused by a distributed denial-of-service (DDOS) attack.

“This again appears to be another strong DDos attack. We are working hard to overcome it and will update when possible. It's currently 2am in Japan so please forgive us if our Facebook / Twitter updates are not as quick, though the team is certainly not taking any breaks,” Mt. Gox wrote on Facebook.

“We're very much looking forward to implementing a much stronger solution very soon and will make an announcement to that effect once it's in place.”

Currently, the website appears to be working properly.

A couple of weeks ago, shortly after Bitcoin reached $260 (€198), Mt. Gox reported downtimes due to the large number of new users.

At the time, many speculated that the disruptions might be caused by DDOS attacks aimed at bringing down the value of the virtual currency, but the company denied being hit by cybercriminals.
