14 DAY TRIAL // BitTorrent has released major updates for users of its Sync application across OS X, Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android. Key changes include UI upgrades, the ability to share sync folders via email, QR code, or other apps, support for TCP connectivity between peers, and lots more.
“BitTorrent Sync from BitTorrent lets you sync and share unlimited files and folders across all of your trusted devices,” according to its creators.
“Sync and share any file! Photos, videos, word docs, PDFs - any file big or small. Sync can handle any size and there are no limits. Sync all the GBs you want.”
BitTorrent Sync 1.3.67 for desktop platforms greatly reduces parasite traffic when between peers, tracker, and during LAN search, adds support for TCP connectivity between peers, tracker, and relay, and handles case-insensitive file systems much better.
Support has been added for extended attributes and file streams, the getting started assistant has been improved, sync notifications have been redesigned, and there’s a new advanced option to configure the external (NAT) port. Folder indexing has been optimized and log rotation has been added. BitTorrent also mentions UI tweaks.
A mile-long list of fixes is also offered. For example, an issue involving check-for-updates on Mac and Linux is cleared. On Windows, tooltips have been added in the Devices tab. On iOS, the developers redesigned the app “to make it more beautiful and easy to use.” Privacy has been enhanced with a passcode lock option for all locales, and there’s a new ability to share your sync folders via email, QR code, or other apps from folder preferences.
Users can now tap and hold a downloaded file to see an “Open in…” option, and files can now be filtered by all vs. only downloaded. You can also clear saved files from the app memory now. Various improvements and fixes have been made throughout the entire iOS client.
In addition to all the regular features, BitTorrent Sync for iOS lets you view photos with a neat photo viewer.
“To get the best performance and avoid running up your data charges while syncing your mobile device, we recommend leaving the ‘Use Cellular Data’ setting off,” BitTorrent adds.
Android users also get a redesigned version of the software. The new sharing feature is also available, and a new backup folder view is offered. Auto-sleep and other battery saving options have been improved, including mobile data usage.
Recently, a Windows Phone version of BitTorrent Sync was launched.
