Transmission, an open source cross-platform BitTorrent client that strives to be as simple as possible, has advanced to version 2.83 and comes with a flurry of changes and improvements.

Transmission is one of the most used BitTorrent clients on the Linux platform. Besides being a very good application by itself, it's also included by default in Ubuntu, which in turn is the most used desktop Linux flavor.

The application uses GTK and Qt for the interface, and this means that it works very well in most operating systems, including Mac OS X. The developers also provide binaries and the source package for most of the Linux distributions out there.

Transmission also comes with a huge number of features, including terminal support for the hardcore users that don't stand the look of a GUI, a Web client, encryption, DHT, µTP, PEX and Magnet Link support, just to name a few. You can check our review of Transmission for more details about the software.

The developers usually release big upgrades for the software, even if the version number doesn't seem to indicate any major changes. For example, some network hanging issues that could occur when both UTP and DHT were enabled have been fixed, a file descriptor leak that happened when the user was importing a blocklist has been fixed, torrents that contain "/../" in the path are no longer allowed, a potential dangling memory error in UDP tracker DNS lookups has been corrected, and a torrent's "queued" state is now remembered between Transmission sessions.

Also, third-party libraries have been updated, the X-Transmission-Session-Id header has been fixed and is again valid with the SPDY protocol, the Quota feature is now respected when determining free disk space on NetBSD, a threading issue on shutdown has been fixed, an "Open URL" crash that occurred from a dangling pointer has been fixed, launching downloaded files from inside Transmission (Qt version) is now supported, and the network status info and tooltip in the status bar have been improved.

It will take a while for this version to hit all the repositories. Some of them might have it already, while other are still waiting. For example, Ubuntu has yet to receive the new Transmission 2.83 version and it will probably be a few days until it is available for update.

A comprehensive changelog can be found in the official announcement. You can download the Transmission 2.83 source right now from Softpedia if you want to compile the latest release by yourself.
