It has been a well known mantra for many years, the internet loves cats. There's never enough cats on the internet and anything and everything becomes better when add cats into the mix.

But no one has stood to question this axiom, especially since empirical evidence suggests that it's true.

Alas, the scientists at Bit.ly were not satisfied with empirical evidence, they needed cold hard data. Luckily for them, Bit.ly is just the place to find out what is popular online and what are people sharing.

And the evidence speaks for itself, while cats are definitely well represented, there are 50 percent more pages with dogs than there are with cats.

"While cats have a respectable lead, the winner is clear — dogs are 37% of the total results in the cute animal set," Bit.ly explained, debunking the decade long cat-lovers conspiracy.
