The Birch Aquarium at the University of California, San Diego is now home to seven baby seadragons. The tiny creatures hatched towards the end of September, and belong to a species known as the weedy seadragon.

Aquarium staff explains that the baby seadragons hatched from eggs carried on its tail by a male donated to this facility by the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California.

The male left its previous home on September 1, and traveled to the Birch Aquarium via a private plane, Zoo Borns tells us.

At that time, there was some concern that the journey would prove a tad too stressful, and that this would cause the male to drop the eggs.

“Transporting adult Seadragons is not something that happens very often, and we were a bit concerned about how well they would handle the move from Monterey to Birch. When the male weedy was discovered with eggs on its tail, that elevated our worry to a new level,” Jonelle Verdugo at the Monterrey Bay Aquarium explains.

Luckily, things turn out all right.

By the looks of it, staff at the Birch Aquarium is now looking into the possibility of also breeding leafy seadragons.
