Mac Walters, lead writer working on the Mass Effect series at BioWare, says that his team underestimated how much gamers cared about Commander Shepard and how much they wanted to decide his final fate.

He tells Complex the studio understands that the fan community is still troubled by the original ending of Mass Effect 3, but there are no plans to further refine the closing moments of the game past the changes delivered in the free Extended Cut.

Walters says, “you’ve been given free choice to make all these decisions with this character, with the fates of millions of people, and then, you don’t get to choose your own fate. And I’m not saying that our decision was wrong or right.”

He then compares the ending of Mass Effect 3 to that of Breaking Bad and explains that BioWare has plans to change its approach to game finales in its future titles.
