BioWare is one of the most talked about and watched over development teams at the moment and the reasons are easy to see. It is developing at least three announced titles, which are targeted at very different consumer groups and will all strive to offer the best possible experience in the genre.
Mass Effect 2 is set to expand on the space opera legacy of the series while revamping combat, dialogue and offering a darker, more complex story that might involve the death of the main character, Commander Shepard.
Dragon Age: Origins was pitched as the spiritual successor of Baldur's Gate and sees BioWare mix and match high and low fantasy to deliver a deep, mature experience paired with a lot of tactical combat. And, finally,
Star Wars: The Old Republic is set to be the first fully voiced MMO that offers players the equivalent of a full role playing experience complete with the social aspect inherent to the genre.
But what about the future? Ray Muzyka, who is the general manager, and Greg Zeschuk, who is the creative officer for BioWare, have talked to GamesIndustry.biz about what videogames can offer to players and what new experiences their company might create. Muzyka teased the possibility of a RPG set in the present day saying that “We are interested in contemporary settings. We haven't announced anything on that front, but it's safe to say that we think it's rich with possibility as well.”
Zeschuk praised the way games handle acting and camera work and responded to a question about a gaming romantic comedy by saying that “I think we're actually getting to the point where the acting is almost there. We talk a certain amount internally about whether you need to have combat as part of the experience. Are there possibilities to actually start separating pieces of the game and actually tailor it to the audience? Certainly the core gaming experience, folks that are used to playing games over the last ten years, they want to have those battle moments, and the fighting. But there are different audiences that would maybe just enjoy the story.”
