The Retaliation multiplayer downloadable content for Mass Effect 3 adds the Collectors as a new enemy group for players and the development team has offered information on how the new race is designed to suppress human tactics and offer them a tougher challenge.

Brenon Holmes, who is the senior gameplay designer at BioWare, has stated, “When approaching the re-creation of the scion, we wanted to present the gigantic arm cannon as the focus of the creature, because of the sheer suppression that the Scion can generate on the battlefield. It quickly became clear that the Scion truly needed a presence on the battlefield, so his posing and appearance was changed to become much more menacing.”

Boldwin Li, the gameplay designer, added, “The Collectors are truly about controlling space and restricting escape routes. The Collector Captain suppresses power based classes using seeker swarms, which players can target and destroy if they are quick enough.”

All of the Collector enemies have abilities that can suppress player powers and that means that a balanced team is required to take them down and physical assaults will be required to take down Collectors before powers become effective again.

BioWare has also offered information on the Praetorian, who is able to create a biotic sphere around himself and block all power based attacks, allowing other enemies to move under his cover in order to assault the enemy.

Harbinger will also make an appearance, using his old Mass Effect 2 power in order to assume control on all his minions.

The Retaliation DLC also introduces new weapons, new mods and more characters for players to use and makes the multiplayer side of Mass Effect 3 much more varied.

BioWare has also introduced Challenges to the game and promises that each week gamers will have access to a new Operation with various individual and game-wide targets.
