Developers have freedom to create their own stories

As the fan pressure to change the ending of Mass Effect 3 continues to build up and seems to extract a reaction from developer BioWare, a pair of well-known developers have said that the team has the right to impose whatever ending they want on the players, because it reflects their unique vision for the universe.

Paul Barnett, who is the creative director working at Mythic Games, answered a question from the audience at the Smithsonian American Art Museum by saying that, “If computer games are art than I fully endorse the author of the artwork to have a statement about what they believe should happen. Just as J.K. Rowling can end her books and say that is the end of Harry Potter. I don’t think she should be forced to make another one.”

Levine was also part of the session, which marked the opening of a show which details how video games can be seen as art, and added, “I think if those people got what they wanted and wrote their ending they would be very disappointed in the emotional feeling they got because they didn’t really create it. I think this whole thing is making me a little bit sad because I don’t think anyone would get what they wanted if that happened.”

The fans are basically asking BioWare to admit that the current ending of Mass Effect 3 is flawed and move to create another via, which would presumably be offered via downloadable content to all those who have bought the game.

BioWare has said that it is listening to all feedback linked to their most high profile recent releases and that it will talk more about the ending once more players have managed to complete Mass Effect 3.

In the meanwhile the company is busy preparing more Operation level multiplayer challenges for the game after the success of this weekend’s Goliath.
