One was a tower defense spinoff while another focused on cooperative action

BioShock Infinite, the upcoming first person action game from Irrational Games, was set to feature not one but two different multiplayer modes, according to a new report, but they were both scrapped earlier this year.

BioShock Infinite shifts the franchise made by Irrational Games into a whole new direction, taking place in the floating city of Columbia at the beginning of the 1900s.

We already admired lots of details, screenshots, and videos about the game since its announcement back in 2010. Sadly, the studio was forced to recently delay the game, saying that it needs extra time to polish it up.

Many believed this delay was due to Irrational’s desire to implement a multiplayer mode and now a report from Kotaku claims that not one but two multiplayer experiences were prototyped by the studio for the game.

The first was a sort of tower defense mode, in which players were shrunk and placed in an old arcade machine, in which they had to fight against waves of enemies that rolled out on tracks around them. Players could work alone or with a friend but the whole experience was quickly scrapped.

Afterwards, Irrational started developing a more traditional cooperative mode dubbed Spec Ops, which saw up to four players work together and try to survive in various areas of Columbia in front of different enemies.

This mode has also been scrapped and it seems that BioShock Infinite will, in fact, be a purely single-player experience, at least when it’s going to be released in February, 2013.

The fact that the studio lost a lot of key staff has also worried fans, but the studio’s boss, Ken Levine, has revealed that there are still plenty of key personnel working on the title.

"As far as the team itself, the lead artist, the art director, the creative director, the lead effects artist, the senior sound guy, the lead programer and the lead AI programmer from BioShock 1 are all on BioShock Infinite. I don't think there's a single senior BioShock team member that isn't here, which I think is amazing and a testament to their commitment to the studio. And there are a ton of amazing people who weren't on BioShock 1 that are on BioShock Infinite," he told the website.

Irrational also recently hired Epic Games’ director of production, Rod Fergusson, so it seems that BioShock Infinite will make its February, 2013 release date.
