BioShock was one of the greatest games in the last few years, thanks to its great story, intriguing gameplay mechanics and tough moral issues that it raised and offered to players. But even though it was a great experience, the fact that it didn't have a multiplayer mode made it insignificant to a lot of gamers who were interested in this feature.

Now, for quite some time, the sequel to the game, BioShock 2, has been surrounded by a lot of rumors about a supposed multiplayer mode, which spanned from a co-op single-player campaign to a dedicated, Splicer-only deathmatch mode, or something only for Big Daddies.

Now, thanks to 2K Games, which will be publishing the title, it seems that there will be a multiplayer mode for BioShock 2, and it will be developed by the team at Digital Extremes, which also worked on great online titles like Unreal Tournament. The main team at 2K Marin will work closely with Digital Extremes and will provide a lot of assets to be introduced in this new mode.

The mode will act as a prequel, and it is shaping up to be something of a must-play, as gamers will become test subjects for the plasmids made by Sinclair Solutions, and will have to explore the world of Rapture and see it fall into decadence and, ultimately, into ruin. The wide variety of plasmids and tonics are certain to give birth to a lot of interesting combinations.

“The fans asked for a multiplayer experience and we answered,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. “With Digital Extremes delivering a multiplayer experience for BioShock 2 that features all of the things that make BioShock unique, we’re holding ourselves to a high standard so that we can deliver the depth and variety that fans of the BioShock universe demand.”

Here are some of the features that will be included in this new mode:

Evolution of the genetically enhanced shooter – Earn experience points during gameplay to earn access to new Weapons, Plasmids and Tonics that can be used to create hundreds of different combinations, allowing players to develop a unique character that caters to their playing style.

Extend the Rapture fiction – Players will step into the shoes of Rapture citizens and learn more about the fall of Rapture as they progress through the experience.

See Rapture before the fall – Experience Rapture before it was reclaimed by the ocean and engage in combat over iconic environments in locations such as Kashmir Restaurant and Mercury Suites, all of which have been reworked from the ground up to deliver a fast-paced multiplayer experience.

All in all, BioShock 2's multiplayer mode will certainly be something that fans will want to explore and thus take the whole experience one step further. Look forward to the game at the end of this year.
