Today, Bing users can enjoy one of the most exquisite spectacles in the world, straight on their desktop PCs, courtesy of its latest video background.

That would be the Aurora borealis, which can be enjoyed in very few places in the world, all of which might seem cold and unwelcoming to many.

However, the phenomenon is as impressive as it can be, even when seen on the small screen of your personal computer.

Bing has accustomed us with great background images and videos so far, and this is another example of their commitment to ensure that users have a great viewing experience when accessing its page.

In addition to the animated video, which uses HTML5 technology, users will also be able to access info and photos on Aurora borealis, as well as on Yellowknife, a Canadian city.

For those out of the loop, we should note that Yellowknife is the largest city in the Northwest Territories, Canada, and is also considered their capital.

A quick look on Wikipedia reveals that the city is located on the Northern shore of Great Slave Lake, and that the Arctic Circle is only 400 km north of it. The city is placed on the west side of Yellowknife Bay near the outlet of the Yellowknife River.

The Wikipedia article also explains that both Yellowknife and its surrounding water bodies took their name from the local Yellowknives Dene First Nation, who used to make tools from regional copper deposits.

People from all over the world flock to Yellowknife to have a look at Aurora borealis. They gather outside the city in a place called Aurora Village. A video linked on Bing’s page will offer you some more details on it.

The animated Bing background might not be able to deliver the entire greatness of the sky on fire, but the photos and articles it links to will certainly show a bit more on what Aurora borealis is all about. Just go to Bing’s US page today and find out more.

Thank you for a spectacular real-time viewing of something that I would love to see in person. I heard a whole bunch of meditators, considering this to be a special event when ionized particles interacting with earth's magnetic field causes electronic excitation that can be used for higher order meditation. I do not know if Wikipedia as any research on this. I'd love to read more on the neurological effects of aurora borealis...as it is going to increase as well as spread with global warming...especially in the North Americas. Thanks for wonderful nature pictures on Bing! I always enjoy it!
