Microsoft is playing second fiddle to Google in several areas, online maps being one of them. But, as everywhere else, Microsoft is working on improving the service, in the latest update Bing Maps has improved the routing engine quite a lot, it's twice as fast as before in some cases.
"I can tell you that we’re enjoying the reduced latency, high performance, low overhead benefits of a new route calculation algorithm that changes the game in how driving directions queries are computed," Bing Maps product manager Chris Pendleton
wrote.
Regular users are not going to notice the the algorithm has changed, they may not even notice that it's faster, but these are the type of changes that make a service better.
Users don't have to 'notice' a change, but they will feel it and that's what adds up to a great user experience.
