14 DAY TRIAL // Microsoft is well known for going deep into its own pockets whenever philanthropic efforts need financing, but the latest initiative from the company is meant to not only help those affected by the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, but also promote the software giant’s search/decision engine. Bing.com has partnered with "The Colbert Report" donating no less than $2,500 every time that Stephen Colbert mentioned Bing.
And Colbert went all out on Microsoft in an effort to raise money to help the relief efforts designed to alleviate the impact of the oil gushing into the gulf after a British Petroleum oil rig exploded. Just watch the two videos embedded at the bottom of this article, and see Colbert go on a Bing binge, which resulted in an estimated $100,000 donation from Microsoft.
“Stephen Colbert and his generous fans are supporting relief efforts. The host of the Colbert Report and leader of the Colbert Nation, along with Bing.com have begun the effort with a $100,000 commitment to a new charitable fund - THE COLBERT NATION GULF OF AMERICA FUND. This fund will be used for general relief. From it, grants will be made to nonprofits that work directly to help the people and wildlife affected by this oil spill,” an excerpt from the website’s description reads.
The Colbert Nation Gulf of America Fund is managed by the Baton Rouge Area Foundation, a community foundation that was also involved in the relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina. “The catastrophe resulting from the oil rig explosion spreads across the southeast. What’s more, scientists say the swift gulf currents could move oil to sensitive coral reefs on Key West, then 100 miles per day up the Atlantic coast, which is as rich with sea life as the Gulf of Mexico,” it is added on the Colbert Nation Gulf of America Fund webpage.
