Both Google and Microsoft struggle to improve their search engines and provide more relevant results to their users, but a new study carried out by AV-TEST revealed that only the Mountain View-based tech giant has obtained significant results in this regard.

The company analyzed a total of 40 million websites over a period of 18 months, according to the official results documents published on the AV-TEST.org page (PDF reader required).

Approximately 20 million of the websites were included in Google and Microsoft results, while less known search engines such as Yandex, Baidu, and Blekko accounted for the rest.

While Google recorded the best results, Bing arrived second but, according to security researchers, Microsoft’s search engine delivered five times more malware-hosting websites than its long-time rival.

Out of the 40 million websites included in the study, nearly 5,000 were hosting potential pieces of malware, AV-TEST wrote, so it’s pretty clear that companies must continue their efforts in the security department.
