Bill Gates has often been considered one of the potential replacements for Microsoft’s outgoing CEO Steve Ballmer, with some recent rumors suggesting that he could be back to help the development of Windows 10.

Even though Bill Gates has always expressed his desire to continue charity efforts around the world, analysts and experts believe that such a comeback would be benefic for the Redmond-based tech giant.

Now AllThingsD is reporting that Gates’ return to Microsoft is a move that his wife Melinda and other close friends do not agree with, so the company’s co-founder would only help the board find a replacement for Steve Ballmer. Stephen Elop, on the other hand, the former Nokia CEO who’s joining the company as part of today’s deal, is now in pole-position to take over from Ballmer, with sources suggesting that an official announcement on this is likely to be released soon.
