If you thought that Bill Gates was spending all his money on charity work, think again. Microsoft’s co-founder has recently bought himself a nice gift in the form a da Vinci manuscript with an estimated value of $30.8 million (€23.6 million).

Bill Gates told CBS News that he decided to purchase the manuscript because da Vinci’s words were inspiring him. The Italian artist used the 500-year-old manuscript to express his thoughts on the properties and uses of water.

"He had an understanding of science that was more advanced than anybody else at the time. He's looking at how it flows when it hits barriers and it goes around and comes back together," Gates told CBS News’ Charlie Rose

"He's actually trying to understand turbulence. How you build a dam, does it erode away? It's an inspiration, that one person off on their own with no positive feedback, that he kept pushing himself... found knowledge in itself to be a beautiful thing."

Bill Gates, who’s no longer involved in Microsoft’s everyday business, recently backed both Windows 8 and Surface tablets in an interview, saying that iPad users are leaving Apple because they are frustrated with the lack of productivity apps.
