Security and trust are the key

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates sees only one obstacle in the way of a world of anywhere access: security. And Microsoft's answer is trust. Trust and security will enable users to open the door for a new world of connected experiences, making information, communities and content instantly and seamlessly available.

"Trust and security are critical priorities for Microsoft. I wanted to share my thoughts with you about the changing nature of security and the work that is being done at Microsoft to advance trust in computing and to help pave the way for future connected experiences based on secure and easy anywhere access," wrote Bill Gates in an open email.

Microsoft aims to deliver trust to no less than 1 billion people estimated to be using digital technology in their everyday life. For this, Microsoft will focus on building digital identities, networks and protect information.

"The proliferation of identities and identity systems is a significant problem and a difficult challenge. We all struggle to remember an ever-growing number of user names and passwords as we move between systems at work and home. Because it is unlikely that a single digital identity system or technology will be universally adopted, a different approach is required - an approach based on creating a system of systems that provides the interoperability needed to link all identity solutions and technologies," explained Gates speaking about the implementation of an identity metasystem.

According to Bill Gates, the security environment needs to switch from its current strategy to a policy-based system. Gates has argued that with policy-based security, different platforms and devices can share similar protective rules. Additionally, policy-based systems will deliver protection and privacy for information at all the tiers where the data may be located at any given time, and not only in transit.
