He is still the man we knew, Camille Cosby says

“America’s dad,” one of the most popular comedians of all times, Bill Cosby, is seeing his entire legacy endangered by allegations of rape, after several women have stepped forward in the past couple of months to tell the horrific tale of the abuses he subjected them to decades ago.

The controversy is huge because Cosby was always seen as the perfect family man, the loving and doting father (and grandfather) who would tell funny jokes and never hurt a fly, let alone lure a much younger woman to his place, drug her senseless, and then have his way with her.

He is still the same man the world knew, despite the false allegations that have been brought up against him, his longtime wife says in her first statement since the scandal.

Think of who the real victim is

Camille and Bill have known each other since 1963 and have been married since 1964, so if there’s anyone who can say they know Bill inside-out, she is probably that person.

In a statement to the media (via Yahoo! Celebrity), Mrs. Cosby says the man she knew in the first years of their relationship, the man with whom she fell in love and started a family, is still the same man of today. He never changed and he never did the things he’s being accused of.

The man these women are talking about to the over-eager media that’s always out for yet another juicy scandal story, is not the real Bill Cosby. It’s the media’s fault that these women’s allegations are published without any consideration to the simple – yet essential – fact of being true or not.

They are not true but they’re mediatization makes them appear so, which, in turn, makes Bill’s once-loyal fans question everything he’s done. This is character assassination; and it’s being done in a consistent and most conscious manner, Camille says.

“None of us will ever want to be in the position of attacking a victim,” she says. “But the question should be asked – ‘who is the victim?’”

Allegations against Bill Cosby are racially motivated

Camille echoes statements coming from her husband’s camp on the reason why he’s suddenly the target of so many rape allegations.

Late last weekend, a reporter for the New York Post got him on the phone for a couple of minutes, and he finally opened up about the accusations. He wouldn’t address them directly because there’s an ongoing investigation into them, but he did say this of the treatment he’s been getting in the media: “Let me say this. I only expect the black media to uphold the standards of excellence in journalism and when you do that you have to go in with a neutral mind.”

To put in more blunt terms: it’s the white media that’s publishing the rape allegations because this is a racially motivated attack against him.

An attorney for Cosby tells the aforementioned media outlet that he didn’t know that the phone conversation with the reporter was being recorded or would be published. So the reporter is in breach of the standards of journalism.

Bill Cosby should not cry “racism”

Iconic model Beverly Johnson, one of the biggest names in fashion in the ‘70s and also a very influential person in the industry of fashion overall, came out last week with her own sordid tale of (attempted) rape involving Cosby.

She wrote a very detailed op-ed about how Cosby got her to his house under the promise of an acting gig and then made sure he was alone with her. She also wrote about how he slipped her drugs in a cappuccino cup and how she avoided the other women’s fate by fighting back the moment she realized what was happening to her, before blacking out.

As for why she took so many years to speak out, she was afraid, just like the others: afraid of what he might to do her personally or professionally, afraid no one would believe her, afraid she’d be blamed for the rape, as if any victim could ever “ask for it.”

Johnson is an African American and she went to great lengths to say that Cosby wasn’t being targeted for the color of his skin, but for the many years for which his crimes have gone unpunished. She joined the long list of women saying that he’s a despicable monster who prays on the young, and who should be sent to jail for it. Race had nothing to do with it.
