In addition to sporting a better camera, the bigger iPhone 6 model allegedly planned for launch this year will be the only version to offer a 128GB storage option, according to sources in the supply chain.

Chinese media has it on file from people in the supply chain that Apple wants to properly differentiate the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 as high-end by offering a higher-than-ever storage option for the handset, namely 128GB. Currently, only the iPad range of tablets offers this capacity. Machine translation below:

“According to the latest reports from an Apple supply chain this year, Apple will add a high-saved version of iPhone 6, which is 128GB. However, 128GB version only for 5.5 inches models.”

The report cannot be confirmed and is therefore classified as a rumor. It comes on the heels of another rumor saying that the “big” iPhone 6 will be the only one to have optical image stabilization (OIS), while the smaller model will also come with some improvements to the camera module.

It’s not uncommon for the supply chain to leak out such details in the months leading up to the announcement of a brand new iPhone model, and this year seems to be no exception to the rule.

Apple is said to be launching the two handsets in September, with the phones becoming physically available on September 19, according to carriers and other Apple partners that couldn’t keep their mouths shut.

At the launch event, Tim Cook & Co. are expected to showcase the phone’s all-new design, faster processor, and increased screen size as the main upgrade points. Other hardware-related rumors include NFC (Near Field Communication) for mobile payments, a longer-lasting battery, a redesigned LED flash, and more.

Mockups created on leaked schematics from the supply chain indicate that Apple plans to redesign the volume buttons to an oval shape and to relocate the Sleep/Wake/Power button to the right-hand side of the phone (when viewed from the front).

The relocation of the Sleep/Wake button is necessary because people are used to accessing it while holding the phone with just one hand, and the bigger form factor would prevent the same action had the button been left at the top of the handset.
