Developer Valve is updating Steam in order to give the new Big Picture mode a wide release, but there are other changes for those who are using the digital distribution service.

One of the main additions allows gamers to use alternate installation locations, which means that titles can be installed outside the Steam folder and even on another partition.

The feature has long been requested by the player community and has been part of the beta client for some time.

Other changes include a fix for the overlay, the elimination of potential GDI leaks, better integration with Steam cloud and a fix for a Windows 8 specific crash.

The full patch notes are available on Steam.

Valve is continuously seeking feedback on Steam from players and is eager to improve the digital distribution service in order to stay ahead of competition like Origin and Gamersgate.
