Apple, ASUS, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, Sony and Toshiba are all wary

The thing about the decline in PC demand is that demand for all PCs has fallen, not just desktops. Smartphones and tablets have cut into the share of laptops as much as they did regular PCs.

This has led to rather pessimistic shipment forecasts for companies the likes of Sony, Toshiba, Samsung, HP and ASUS.

The top nine notebook makers, together, will sell just around 134 million this year, according to DisplaySearch.

That's less than the 152 million predicted before. That the Intel Broadwell CPU line has been delayed isn't helping matters.

Also, low-priced notebooks ($299 / €221) with screen sizes between 14  to 15.6 inches won't be out before June, cutting their marketing time in half. Finally, since Microsoft and Google have both canceled Duo OS laptops, there is one less product branch contributing to the whole.
