Big Momma's back in town, and this time she went straight to the top. "Big Momma's House 2," with Martin Lawrence earned an estimated $28 million on its first weekend, double the total for second-placed "Nanny McPhee."
The original "BigMomma's House," which earned $25.7 million on its opening weekend in 2000, never made it to the first position in the top, but its sequel is ranked No. 1 now.
The original eventually earned $117.5 million, but the $40 million sequel will definitely do even better than this.
"Nanny McPhee," a children's fantasy movie written by and starring Emma Thompson, earned an estimated $14.1 million, having the place before third-place "Underworld Evolution."
"Underworld," a futuristic horror film that started life as a video game, earned $11.1 million. The military romance "Annapolis," the weekend's other major new release, finished fourth with $7.7 million.
Despite the great appreciation at the Golden Globe Awards, "Brokeback Mountain" finished sixth with $6.4 million, pushing its total past $50 million.
