Beyond: Two Souls, the upcoming game from David Cage and his team at Quantic Dream, will be a different experience than the previous Heavy Rain one, as Cage emphasizes that the finished product will surprise players.

Heavy Rain impressed not just through its realistic graphics back in 2010 but also through its unique story and impressive gameplay that was unlike many of the games currently being released.

Beyond: Two Souls, the next project from developer Quantic Dream, won’t try to retread the same ground, as creator David Cage believes the new title is a new type of experience.

“The game is very different from Heavy Rain, probably much more than people can imagine. The first obvious difference is that there will be two characters to control: Jodie and this entity that is Aiden. We can do some really interesting things with Aiden: fly, walk through walls and interact with matter or characters in a rather peculiar way,” Cage told the PS blog.

Beyond will retain some elements from Heavy Rain, like the thriller atmosphere, but also adds more dramatic ones, according to the designer.

“It’s a balance that will be a little different from Heavy Rain, where we really aiming for the atmosphere of a psychological thriller. Beyond, of course, will also have these components of emotion, depth of characters, strong moments, but there will also be a more epic, dramatic dimension.”

Cage also emphasized that the goal of Quantic Dream is to forge a new experience, not just take the Heavy Rain concept further.

“Our goal is not to release a game that will just please the fans of Heavy Rain and that we could say, ‘Ah, yes, it’s like Heavy Rain but a little better’. The idea is really to surprise players and show them that we can actually go much further with the concept of Heavy Rain,” he added.

Beyond: Two Souls is definitely looking like an intriguing experience so it’s going to be interesting to see just how Quantic Dream will deliver it on the PS3.
