If it’s not one thing, then it’s the other: days after rumors of a trial separation between Beyonce and Jay-Z emerged in the press, another report suggests she may be bleaching her skin regularly to appear whiter.

The report comes in the British tabloid the Daily Mail, bearing, as expected, a question mark in the headline. Still, the implications in the piece are undeniable.

Some days ago, Beyonce stepped out for a bit of shopping, wearing a very short skirt (and some insanely amazing turquoise Louboutin heels) and rocking a new ‘do in a lighter shade of blonde.

The Mail takes that picture, puts it next to one take of Beyonce in concert from a couple of years back and then suggests that she may be doing something to her skin to appear less black.

“The 29-year-old singer’s skin also looked much lighter than usual as she showed off her long, bare legs in a pair of £635 jade suede Daffodile heels by Christian Louboutin,” says the tab.

It then goes on to add that the “lighter” skin tone may have been a “trick of the light” – and even calls in an expert to put his two cents in, even though he doesn’t even know the singer.

“The most effective skin-lightening agents are hydroquinone and kojic acid, creams which patients apply to the skin,” Dr. Sunil Chopra, consultant dermatologist at the London Dermatology Centre, is cited as saying.

While this is a common procedure, it’s “unlikely” that Beyonce has had it done because it can’t be done on the entire body but rather to restricted areas.

“The effects are temporary and work by inhibiting the enzyme... responsible for the skin’s pigment. Both are very popular. I see maybe three people every week who want this procedure,” Dr. Chopra says.

“But it cannot be used over the whole body. It is very unlikely she has had her skin bleached in this way,” he adds.
