The other day, while her US fans were sleeping, Beyonce dropped her fifth studio album, called simply “Beyonce,” on iTunes but, as you probably know already, describing it as just another music album is quite an understatement.

“Beyonce” is billed as a “visual album” and it’s meant to be an experience more than a regular listening party of a bunch of songs put together on the same disc. That’s because it includes music videos for the songs as well.

And that’s not the only thing that surprises with this new release: the fact that Beyonce chose to come out with it without as much as an announcement for the press is something that has never been done before.

Beyonce herself explains why she ditched the traditional “method” of releasing new music in the video embedded below: she wanted to leave out all unnecessary third parties in her interactions with fans, and she wanted them to experience her music visually as well, just like she also does.

“I see music. It’s more than just what I hear. When I’m connected to something, I immediately see a visual or a series of images that are tied to a feeling or an emotion, a memory from my childhood, thoughts about life, my dreams or my fantasies. And they’re all connected to the music,” Beyonce explains in the video.

“I didn’t want to release my music the way I’ve done it [before]. I am bored with that. I feel like I am able to speak directly to my fans. There’s so much that gets between the music, the artist and the fans. I felt like I didn’t want anybody to give the message when my record is coming out. I just want this to come out when it’s ready and from me to my fans,” she continues.

She admits that even her own team thought she was “crazy” when she told them what she wanted to do, and that it wasn’t easy pulling off such a stunt, but, in the end, it was absolutely worth it.

“It was important that we made this a movie, we made this an experience. I wanted everyone to see the whole picture, and to see how personal everything is to me,” Beyonce says.

Early reactions from fans and the music industry say that “Beyonce” is an absolute hit, just what you’d expect from someone whose fans call her Queen Bey.
