Season's greetings shouldn't be taken seriously by virus writers, but unfortunately things are a bit more complicated and mobile devices will have a great deal to suffer in 2006 if experts are right. The first virus created for mobile phone was spotted in mid-2004 and throughout
this year there have been more and more versions and new appearances of viruses. Supposedly, as of next year we should begin to face an ever greater number of more dangerous malware customized for mobile phones, says the McAfee security company.
The McAfee Avert Labs department predicts that mobile malware could wreck more extensive damage than current PC threats, which can be easily understood since there are more and more smartphones available and very few users install security applications to protect them from malware.
If McAfee experts are right, a mobile threat targeting several operating systems could infect up to 200 million connected smartphones simultaneously. The biggest risk in the mobile security equation is placed on the users' shoulders, as they don't perceive viruses for mobile phones as real threats and leave them unprotected.
