The NBA finals have made a lot of users look for websites where they can watch the basketball games online. Scammers are leveraging this so it’s important to be on the lookout for their malicious schemes.

According to Symantec, on Sunday, a large number of Facebook users were presented with posts advertising an “NBA finals LIVE STREAM for Free.” The posts inform users that no surveys are required to access the live stream.

NBA fans who fall for it and click on the link are taken to a page hosted on Tumblr. Here, they’re asked to install a shady NBAFinals Facebook application that requests access to the victim’s profile, friend list, and email address.

Once the application is installed, the user is taken to another Tumblr site that’s designed to trick victims into further spreading the scammy posts on their Facebook profiles.

Finally, a fake video window is displayed, instructing internauts to install a so-called “plugin” because their system doesn’t support the video file. The plugin install page is actually part of an affiliate ad program which earns the scammers a certain amount of money each time the page is visited.
