ZeniMax Media, the parent group of publisher Bethesda Softworks, has just revealed that it has acquired Japanese studio Tango Gameworks, which is led by Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami.

ZeniMax Media has brokered some impressive deals recently, including the acquisition of Arkane Studios and extremely popular first person shooter developer id Software, not to mention that it already owns publishing label Bethesda Softworks and developer Bethesda Game Studios.

Now, the North American company has just finished purchasing Japanese game studio Tango Gameworks, which was recently founded by Shinji Mikami.

The game designer is best known for creating the Residet Evil series and the new Vanquish, for Capcom and Platinum Games, respectively.

Mikami, who has over 20 years of experience in the Japanese games industry, alongside his team at Tango Gameworks, which includes developers that worked on Devil May Cry or Final Fantasy, will be working exclusively with ZeniMax and all of its future games will be published by Bethesda.

“It’s refreshing to find a publisher who understands, trusts, and supports the development of blockbuster games and works to make it a collaborative effort,” said Mikami. “The library of AAA franchise titles ZeniMax owns speaks for itself. We are very excited to be joining ZeniMax and working with a company that is dedicated to creating the best games ever made.”

As you can imagine, ZeniMax is extremely thrilled about its newest acquisition.

“Shinji Mikami has earned a stellar reputation as one of the industry’s finest game developers,” said Robert Altman, Chairman and CEO of ZeniMax Media. “He has repeatedly created hit titles that have earned praise from fans and critics around the world. We share his vision for innovative, genre-defining games and look forward to working with Shinji and his team at Tango.”

Do you think this new move is good for ZeniMax or, given the current state of Japanese game development, the American company should have invested in other studios?
