The question is: can you get by without having a TV and just get your news on your iPhone? The short answer is Yes! Use RSS. The long answer to that question is given by the AppStore editors. They have created a new curate list of apps to get you the news fast and as they happen.

The new selection – "Bite-Sized News" – does not have any specific categories and it consists of just 24 apps. But they are some of the best out there.

If we had to split the news in different types, according to these apps, we would have them like that: Articles and reports in classic media (that includes the official worldwide newspapers), news about your friends and the news you care about.

The last type is the news you follow using an RSS Feed Reader from iOS. The most popular syncing engine for RSS is Feedly, and they do have a great free app in the AppStore. However, if you want the best RSS Feed Reader, make sure to get Reeder 2 for iOS. We have talked about this app in the past. It has the most innovative but easy-to-read interface that matched iOS 7 even before it was officially released.

Reeder 2 works with Feedbin, Feedly, Feed Wrangle and up to a total of 11 syncing engines. The most popular is Feedly, but there are others that deserve your full attention. Reeder 2 is one of the few apps with an amazing Mac counterpart that syncs with the iOS app.

If you like curated content along with your RSS Feed items and the stuff your friends share via Twitter or Facebook, you need to try Flipboard. This free app is a true iPad magazine, complete with a great interface and some ways to create your own newspaper and publish it for other users.

Other quirky ways to get your news in time are ReadQuick, Newsy Video, NextDraft or Interesting. Most of these are free.

The second category – the one with the so-called "your friends' news" – is available through apps like the official Twitter client and Paper, the app with an amazing interface but used to display stories from Facebook.

The traditional news outlets that made it on this list are NYT Now, Al Jazeera and Science Today. They are basically free apps that offer the newspaper reading experience in a totally new way, straight on your iPhone or iPad.

Make sure to check out all the apps on this list and get one or two that make you happy. There's no need to get them all, unless you have a hard time deciding upon the best.
