Every once in a while, when it has enough data to work with, Google introduces new cities to the Google Earth 3D Buildings layer. A steady stream of new cities have been added for the past months and now it’s time for not one but two new cities to share the honor of being included, Berlin and Stuttgart. Both cities have a rich history and there’s plenty to see for the Google Earth globetrotter.

“We released two new cities in Google Earth’s 3D Buildings layer today - Berlin and Stuttgart. Both of these proud German cities contain numerous architectural masterpieces, making them ideal destinations for virtual tourism,” Bruce Polderman, Product Manager at Google, wrote.

“Having resided in Stuttgart, I was particularly excited to see many of the places that I’ve frequented appear in Google Earth. The first place I visited on my own virtual tour was Schillerplatz square a site where numerous holiday festivals and markets are held. Walking distance from there is the Schlossgarten, the large, park-like area that includes the old castle, the National Theatre, Stuttgart’s main train station, the opera, and planetarium,” he continued

Google relies heavily on volunteers to populate Google Earth with 3D models and it was no different for these two cities. As is usually the case, a small group of passionate modelers did much of the work. For Stuttgart, Google mentions geo-modelers, peterX and tbr.

Of course, Berlin, Germany’s most famous city and the capital of the country has plenty to offer as well. Google says that the famous Brandenburg Gate at Pariser Platz, associated to the notorious Berlin wall, is probably one of the most popular locations in Google Earth.
