Since Berklee is by far one of the best music schools on Earth and so many big names in music are to be counted among its alumni (Quincy Jones, Melissa Etheridge, John Mayer and so many more), it was a simple question of time until the University stood without its own internet radio station.
Well, no more such a situation as Berklee has finally set up the BIRN: Berklee Internet Radio Network - a 4-channel 24-hour which was under development since 2003 and has now reached its final stage of growth, before being officially launched. The launch for such a daring and rather large event is scheduled to take place
before April 30th and May 3rd and the whole week will be dedicated to a very extensive range of broadcasts.
The BIRN has grown from a simple university radio project to a credit-earning student-run organism which comprises DJs, producers, engineers and promoters and which actually enhances the students' chances for a better career development as well as their creative freedom of expression: on the BIRN not only will you listen to the classic hits of the world but also get the chance to hear new music, coming from the students themselves!
The 1st BIRN Channel will consist of 60 weekly hours spread into 30 student -produced programs covering tracks from indie rock, hip-hop, electronica, R&B and metal, to news, talk, local, latin, jazz, classical, world, and blues. Channel 2 will showcase Special Events such as recorded Berklee concerts or exclusive lectures so people all over the internet can get a glimpse on what's cooking in at Berklee.
The Channel 3 (Air Alumni) is dedicated to broadcasting music and news, as well as student-created materials on Berklee alumni, most of them people you haven't yet gotten to listen to but who are putting up very nice and interesting music whatsoever. Finally, the 4th BIRN Channel will showcase music from famous Berklee graduates as well as contributions from alumni producers, songwriters, studio musicians, arrangers, managers, and engineers.
