Scary and dark...Beowulf in on its way

The first thought that crossed my mind after watching the new Beowulf trailer was "I wish my Old English Literature professor from University could watch this". And I think you'll agree with me after watching it HERE that it doesn't exactly fit anything we could have ever imagined, as groundbreaking director Robert Zemeckis offers a vision of the Beowulf saga that has never been told before.

There's no middle way - you either love it or you hate it, it either sweeps you off your feet or it leaves you staring blankily at the screen thinking "man, that was bad". In the end, though, it doesn't matter which side of the barricade you're on when it comes to admitting that the movie sure packs in a strong punch. And here is a short list of the good and the bad that we can gather from what's been leaked so far, since there are still 2 months to go until the official release, on November 16th.

Good: it stars Ray Winstone, Angelina Jolie, Anthony Hopkins, John Malkovitch and a whole other bunch of talented actors, which manage to bring their characters to life in a remarkably believable way.

Bad: way too much blood and violence handled in a pretty much- movie will get an 'R" rating if they keep all the scenes we've seen in the newly-released second trailer and will lose some of the audience who might actually be inspired by the movie.

Good: The story may appear far-fetched and rather blunt - a monster terrorizes a kingdom somewhere at the end of the world and King Beowulf makes a vow to end the people's pain and the monster's killing spree. But as the story moves forward, the audience gets to discover a world in which no choice is straighforward and gets to witness an intense personal drama that adds a lot of complexity to the characters, particularly Beowulf himself.

Bad: the dark atmospehere is expertly constructed - but not extremely relevant in the context of the movie in the sense that the overall effect is somewhat amiss. At this stage, "Beowulf" doesn't feel like a medieval drama, but more like a science-fiction story, which it is not. Some of the visuals really cut back on the amount of credibility the story gets through the compelling performance of the cast.

Good: Angelina Jolie walking naked out of a pool of golden water - and a full frontal all-access pass to her boobs.
Bad: The scenes are way too short!

So there you have it. Take a look at the latest trailer - remember, it is the "R" rated one and do some serious thinking as to how this movie works for you, now it's no longer a dusty Anglo-Saxon poem in a dusty old book in the library, but rather an epic of trust, love, betrayal and a daring quest meant to offer everyone a perspective no one dared to tackle before.
