Ion-Atom 330 combination scores higher on benchmarks

Even though the future Intel Atom chips have become the subject of much speculation and have stirred anticipations and high expectations in most end-users, it seems that the next Atom CPUs, which Intel is set to release, will not exactly be a cause for general awe, at least according to early benchmark tests made by the German site SemiAccurate (CarTFT). While the upcoming Intel Atom D510 and D410 CPU “Pineview” are indeed faster when it comes to pure processing power, combinations of already existing products, most notably Atom 330 and NVIDIA's Ion platform, scored better in the Windows 7 performance tests and in 3DMark 03.

CarTFT managed to land two motherboard-CPU combinations, namely the basic motherboards D510MO and D410PT, and subjected them to Windows 7 performance tests, 3DMark 01, 3DMark 03, PCMark 05 and CineBench R10. After the individual tests were done, the impression given by the Atom D510 and D410 central processing units was not exactly awe-inspiring. Even though the chips were a little faster than current products, they couldn't exactly boast breakthrough-level performance capabilities.

As more specific results, the D510MO actually does worse than the D410PT on the 3DMark 03 test, with the best score being a small 849 points, compared to the Ion-Atom 330 pairing, namely the Zotac motherboard, which scored over 4000. The D510MO manages a score somewhat equal to the Zotac under PCMark 05.

There is one feature of the new processors that is definitely superior to current products, namely the power consumption. The highest power usage of the D510MO and D410PT CPU-motherboard combination was 33W, with 26W in idle mode, whereas the Atom 330-Ion combo uses between 40W and 45W, depending on the workload and configuration itself.

The retailers that have the processors for pre-order list the D510MO at a price of €69.95 ($103) and the D410PT at €59.95 ($88.50), which is quite cheaper than the ION ITX from Zotac. All in all, the Pineview will be a reasonable choice for a mainstream configuration but definitely not enough to cause ecstatic mass hysteria.
