Benchmark Proves PS3 Is the Best Blu-ray Player

The fact that the PS3 is the main force driving the adoption rate of the Blu-ray discs is pretty much common knowledge nowadays. However, one question that has really given a few nights of restless sleep to quite a lot of people faced with the decision of purchasing their first Blu-ray player was whether Sony's gaming console was the best solution for the playback of Blu-ray movies or not. Well, it seems that now we've got a more or less definitive answer to this question, courtesy of a very interesting comparative benchmark by Blu-ray.com.

The website (which is not related to the Blu-ray Disc Association, meaning that it's probably not interested in promoting one particular company's interests) took some of the most popular standalone Blu-ray players on the market and benchmarked them, following certain specific criteria. The models in question were the Sony PS3 (40GB and 80 GB), Insignia NS-2BRDVD, LG BD300, Olevia BD100, Panasonic BD35, Panasonic BD55, Pioneer BDP-51FD, Pioneer Elite BDP05FD, Samsung 2550, Sharp HP21U, Sony 350 and Sony 550.

The tests carried out on these machines were related to pretty much every important aspect of their operation. We're talking about disc eject times, movie load times (Basic, BD-J and BD+ modes), BD-J (Java) overall performance when playing the Java content, BD-J small and large object performance, as well as BD-J scaling and opacity performances.

The results were a bit surprising, to tell the truth, since they proved that actually, Sony's PS3 was pretty much THE best Blu-ray player out there, out-performing each and every one of its competitors in just about all of the tests mentioned above. Add that to the extra functionality it provides and Sony's claims that the PS3 is all that one needs within one's home entertainment center don't seem that farfetched anymore, especially given the fact that the price tag of the PS3 is actually lower than those of many of its competitors from the test.

I'm a proud 80gb PS3 owner :D

What can I say! This a so powerful and sexy looking peice of hardware. I used to have Xbox 360 core system, its a complete garbage, forget about blue-ray it dosen't even have HD resolution in the box. Microsoft rushed to just to grab a peice of console market, they wowed that they were an year ahead of the console race. Sony did a very impressive work of finishing this extensive peice of hardware, so being an year late dosen't affect much!

(off topic) For a prime example of a fanboy see comment #1.

(on topic)"Benchmark Proves PS3 Is the Best Blu-ray Player
Better even than Sony's own standalone machines"

Well, at twice the price, it had better be. No?

Just a question for those who think 360 outputs in HD.... How can you output in HD if you haven't got a HDMI connection? You connect to your TV through the scart out put... you can't get true HD out of a scart cable.

Every Xbox 360 has "HD resolution in the box". Get your facts straight. And I own both consoles, so don't accuse me of being a fanboy. Maybe you got rid of your 360 because you didn't know how to use it.

Wow! An opinion based off of load times and java content.

God forbid, we can't base reviews of players in terms of hd picture and sound quality, scaling abilities, and features!

Epic fail, maybe?

I agree with anon, the bluray.com benchmark test is meaningless unless your just impatient. the important "TRUE BENCHMARK" is about picture and audio quality as well as scaling abilities.

the ps3 fanboys all have that "it looks great to me" attitude that is nothing more than subjective dribble.

Lets see some serious objective test results

PS3 Rules!!
My test results just in! My friend just purchased a Sharp Aquos BDHP21U player and we put it to the test. We were watching Iron Man on the Sharp Blu-ray player when 1/3 of the way into the movie, the dreaded video garble appeared and wouldn't go away. We started the movie over again and returned to where we left off. Only a minute into the movie and the video garble appeared again. That's it! Out it came and into the PS3. We started the movie from the beginning and watched to the end with out any problems what so ever! And if that's not enough, we started watching BBC's 10 disk DVD "World War II" using the Sharp. First disk played fine, second disk wouldn't play, third disk wouldn't play either. That's it!! Out it came and into the PS3. All disks player perfectly!!
I have owned the 80 gig PS3 for about one year now and every disk, either DVD or Blu-ray has worked perfect! Way to go Sony PS3.
By the way, if you guys think that load times are not important, guess again! The average person, not your Tec no geek, don't give one rats ass about all the numbers. When they put a disk into the player they want the movie to start, not wait and wonder if it's going to play or not!! Can they see the picture quality difference between Sony's player or Sharp's player, NO!! The numbers may say so but the human eye don't!! So all you nerds with all your numbers and your dribble can go cry to mommy!

Who cares? If your happy with Ps3 that great (I have one) if your happy with a stand alone Blu-Ray Player thats great too. PS3 gives more options than a stand alone Blu-Ray player but if games arn't your thing then who cares?? Xbox fans? they can shut right up, like all fanboys they only shame themselves by showing they have nothing more important to do other than worrying about what has better this or that.. nerds

Playstation 3 is hands down one of the best blu ray players out there today. It will most likely stay that way with the firmware updates that will continue to better the system. You get tru hd sound and picture (dts master audio, true hd, and pcm all in 1080 p. Does not get better than that. Just make sure you get a receiver that you can run your hdmi. If you want good picture go to blu-ray.com and check out the ratings in picture quality to get the best your tv can handle. Oh and anyone who says 360 is a piece of junk is just plain out retarded.
