Ben Affleck is using his star power to bring attention to a cause close to his heart: the famous actor and Oscar-winning director has joined the Live Below the Line challenge for The Global Poverty Project, he announces on his Twitter.

The challenge sees celebrities pledging to live on just $1.5 (€1.14) a day on food and water in an effort to give voice to the millions of children dying of poverty-related diseases all across the world.

Below is a PSA with Sophia Bush, who is also part of the challenge, explaining the idea behind it.

“1.4 billion people live on less than $1.50/day. I’m joining Live #BelowTheLine on behalf of @easterncongo. Will you?,” Affleck writes on his Twitter.

He and Sophia aren’t the only celebrities lending their voice to the cause either, as OMG Yahoo! points out, as Josh Groban and Debi Mazar are also on board.

Tom Hiddleston is also living Below the Line and, just like Affleck will probably do, documenting his experience on Twitter.

In a recent interview with British network ITV, the “Thor” actor admitted that he missed coffee and tea the most, and that he would have never imagined people could live in such extreme poverty because, like many others, he too had come to take many things in life – including food – for granted.

With more celebrities going public with their support for the initiative, The Global Poverty Project is bound to be a hit this year.

“Last year we had over 15,000 people participate, and raised over $3 million [€2.2 million],” Michael Trainer, US Country Director of The Global Poverty Project, says in a statement to the aforementioned e-zine.

“We're excited to leverage the support The Global Poverty Project has received from the campaign last year, and the Global Citizen Festival in Central Park,” Trainer adds.
