It’s well known that the United States is one of the main sources of spam, topping the charts in many studies. However, over the past few weeks, the US has been surpassed by Belarus, a small country in Northern Europe, when it comes to the volume of spam that comes out of the country.

According to AppRiver, the company recorded a spike in the number of spam messages being sent from the country’s computers to their customers on April 13. Currently, 12.3 million spam messages are sent each day from Belarus and the number is increasing.

In fact, 99.9% of the emails coming from Belarus are spam. Most of them appear to lead to rogue pharmacy websites, but some of them point to malware-serving sites.

Since April 13, almost 1 billion messages have been sent from the US to AppRiver’s customers, of which 447 million were spam.

As far as Belarus is concerned, over 550 million spam emails have been sent since April 13.

“It’s normal for us to see traffic spikes with various spam and malware campaigns as they come and go; however this one has been significant with the Belarus Spam Volume consistently having a higher Spam Volume than the United States,” AppRiver’s Jonathan French explained.
