After almost three decades spent making fun parodies of all the hit tracks that came his way and despite having sold millions of records, Al Yakovic finally got his big break this last week, when his 12th album made it to the number ten spot in the album Billboard chart.
'Lynwood' thus became Yankovic's first number ten album, while the spoof 'White 'N' Nerdy', after Chamillionaire's 'Ridin'' came at ninth in the Billboard Hot 100 singles. After so many years working just as hard as any other performer, Al is happy at last.
'I literally danced a little jig [when I found out]. It's just a number but, I've been obsessing over it for a long part of my career. Even with, you know, millions of records sold, I've never been in the top 10, and it's always been a goal of mine', the parodist said in a recent interview with CNN.
When asked about what might have led to such a change in people's hearts, Al blamed it all on the Internet, as the saying goes. It is the Internet that helped him become more popular than before, with YouTube listing 'White 'N' Nerdy' among the available videos and with his profile on MySpace listing more than 155,000 friends.
'The ["Nerdy"] video has gotten a lot of attention, and the proliferation of places like YouTube has been a big help. I used to be a little pickier. [...] It's a little dreamlike. I can't believe I'm getting this at this point in my life', Yankovic concluded by saying.
