Janet Napolitano has decided to resign from the position of US Department of Homeland Security secretary.

However, before leaving the agency, she warns her successor of a the possibility of a major cyber event, terrorist threats, weather-related events, and the need to reinforce the security of US borders.

According to AFP, Napolitano – who has been a vocal supporter of proper cyber legislation that would protect US critical infrastructure against cyberattacks – warns that we should expect a major cyber event that will have a serious impact on society.

Napolitano leaves the DHS shortly after US President Barack Obama signed an administrative order aimed at protecting the country’s critical infrastructure against cyber threats. The order puts the DHS in charge of facilitating communications between stakeholders.

It’s uncertain who will replace Napolitano. Potential candidates are NY Police Chief Ray Kelly, former LA PD Chief William Bratton, US Coast Guard Commandant Thad Allen, DHS officials Craig Fugate and John Pistole, and former independent senator Joe Lieberman.
