David Beckam is still not over his giving up the captaincy of England's national team. The Real Madrid midfielder decided to give it up about 6 months before the World Cup, but admitted that the moment he really had to leave the skipper position was a decisive moment in his career. "Resigning the England captaincy was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. I had decided six months earlier to quit but it got to me so much, I was physically sick afterwards." "I could have come out and said I was going to resign six months before the World Cup but I didn't want all the hype about 'who is going to be the next captain' and questions about whether I was focused enough to play", said David in a Daily Mirror interview. Of course, his transition would have gone a lot smoother if the new coach, Steve McClaren, would have picked him up for England's qualifying matches for the Euro 2008 campaign. Still, the former Middlesborugh technician did not call David to one single match and the English media loved it. Despite facing immense criticism in his country, Beckam is convinced that he deserves to play for the national team and that his performance at the World Cup, despite not perfect, was a good one: "I look back at the World Cup and think maybe I didn't play my best football, but I scored a goal and set-up three, and they were important goals. My statistics were pretty good". Still, when talking about a future comeback with the national squad, Beckam admitted that he has little hopes for a new cap. "I don't like to take the easy option and the easy option would be to pack everything in and think 'I am never going to play for England again.' Well, I might never play again. That's entirely possible. But I am the type of person who will fight for things", admitted Becks'.
