It's astounding what some people will go through in order to be today's definition of “beautiful.” While most will engage in costly and sometimes dangerous procedures, an aspiring beauty queen from Venezuela had a plastic mesh sewn to her tongue to keep her from eating solids and thus lose weight.

The 18-year-old Mayer Nava resorted to the drastic technique because she desperately wants to become the next Miss Venezuela. According to the Mirror, the girl is so determined to win the crown that she has already spent $7,000 (€5,088) on plastic surgeries on her nose and breast augmentation.

The “patch diet” consists of basically having a doctor sew a plastic mesh patch on your tongue that induces a sensation of pain every time you try to eat solids. In her own words, “It makes me lose weight faster. You eat the same but liquefied.”

Also known as the “Miracle Patch,” this method of losing weight was introduced in 2009 by Dr. Nikolas Chugay, and promises a weight loss of up to 30 pounds (13.6 kg) or more in a month.

The girl decided that this was the best way for her to lose weight fast. She lives in a Santa Cruz barrio in Caracas and is reportedly doing this because she wants to show the world that “people from the slums can succeed.”

One can argue that her efforts in altering her body defeat the purpose of a beauty pageant which is to find the most naturally beautiful girl, but, sadly, this no longer applies to such events in Venezuela, where these have become a virtual industry.

At the moment, the city of Caracas in Venezuela has a very high murder rate and is listed as one of the most dangerous places in the world to live. Thousands of girls join the Miss Venezuela competition every year and go to great lengths in order to win the coveted crown which offers the winner a better lifestyle.
