Inter Milan is in crisis! That's a fact. Roberto Mancini's side is now scoreless in the Champions League after 2 rounds, and lies 4th in Group B's standings, with 0 points. After their embarrassing loss at Lisbon 2 weeks ago, the Italians hosted Bayern Munich at San Siro Stadium yesterday night.
The German side held a record of 6 points out of 2 matches in the last 2 CL seasons, and they were aiming for their 3rd in Milan. The first half failed to produce a great show on the pitch, with both sides aiming to annihilate themselves on midfield.
The second half, though, held all the action of the match. And the decisive moment was Zlatan Ibrahimovic's red card in the 58th minute of the match. The Swede committed a useless fault at midfield
and left his side in 10 men with more than half an hour on the clock.
Still, it was the same Inter to have the first great scoring chance of the second half. Hernan Crespo wasted a perfect shot from inside the penalty area, hitting the ball right in the center-goal. Kahn had no problem with that whatsoever.
Bayern's opener came a few minutes later, when Pizarro managed to squeeze the ball into the goal, despite Julio Cesar's and Grosso's efforts to block him. Once 1-0 up on the scoreboard, Bayern took control of the game. Their mission got a lot easier 3 minutes later, when Grosso elbowed Sagnol and got himself another red card.
In the end, Cordoba lost concentration and practically served newly substituted Podolski with a perfect pass, as the German sealed Munich's win. The result took Bayern top of the table, while Inter is still to win a point in the Champions League this season.
"We didn't want to take any risks in the first half and we wanted to try and score. We knew it would be a tough game because Bayern are a very strong team and we were convinced we could win the match in the second half. But then the sending off and their first goal came, and it could have been avoided because Bayern hadn't done anything special up to that point in the game", said Mancini after the match.
He added: "We can't always play with ten men because it becomes harder, even though we didn't risk much in numerical inferiority. It's clear that the match changed face after the first sending off. We have played two Champions League matches and had three players sent off. These things are costly in the cup".
The other match of the group saw Spartak Moscow and Sporting Lisbon finish undecided, 1-1. The Russian side opened the score early in the game, through Boyarintsev (4th minute). Despite Spartak's great scoring chances throughout the match, the home side failed to squeeze all the 3 points, since Nani got the equalizer for Sporting in the 59th minute, at his team's first offensive play of the night.
Group B Standings:
1. Bayern Munich 6p 6-0 2. Sporting Lisbon 4p 2-1 3. Spartak Moscow 1p 1-5 4. Inter Milan 0p 0-3
