The latest update for Bayanihan Linux 5 has been released, introducing several new packages as well as plenty of updates and fixes. Bayanihan Linux 5 Revision 4 now comes with LibreOffice as an alternative office suite, though OpenOffice.org is still available.

Revision 4 also switches to Firefox 4 as the new default browser, so users can enjoy Mozilla's latest and greatest update.

The switch makes sense, despite the fact that Bayanihan is aimed at lower spec hardware, since Firefox 4 is significantly faster and more efficient than the Firefox 3.6 it's replacing.

"The Bayanihan Linux 5 Revision 4 is now available for download! The newest Kalumbata revision now features LibreOffice by The Document Foundation, an Open Source office productivity suite greatly derived from OpenOffice.org. However, OpenOffice.org 3.3, the latest version, is still bundled in the installer," Tracy Melissa C. Decena annonced on the Bayanihan Linux homepage.

"Also packed in the new ISOs is the latest release of BL5's default web browser, Mozilla Firefox 4. Tons of security updates are also added. For old BL users, software updates can be downloaded via Synaptic," she added.

Since Bayanihan is based on Debian, albeit the old stable branch not the latest Debian 6.0 Squeeze, upgrading and updating is straightforward and the team provides in the release announcement a step-by-step explanation of how to get the latest software available to existing users via Synaptic.

About Bayanihan Linux

Bayanihan Linux has been around for a decade now and started as a project of the Philippine Advanced Science and Technology Institute. Initially based on Red Hat Linux and later Fedora core, it switched to Debian from Bayanihan Linux 3.1 forward and uses the old KDE 3.5 desktop.

Bayanihan Linux Desktop Edition 5.4 (aka Revision 4) is available for download here on Softpedia. The older Bayanihan Linux Government Edition 5.3 is also available for download here.
