14 DAY TRIAL // EA has just released a brand new Battlefield iteration in its free to play strategy, entitled, suggestively, Battlefield Play4Free, exclusively for the PC.
After the mixed response gathered by Battlefield Heroes, another free to play online shooter created by DICE, the studio behind the full pledged Battlefield first person shooter franchise, EA is poised to try again and dominate the online PC market.
With Battlefield Play4Free, EA is introducing a more realistic take on the shooter series, unlike the one in Heroes, and can support all of the trademark Battlefield features including vehicular combat, sandbox gameplay, and 32-player online matches.
“We broke new ground in 2009 with the launch of Battlefield Heroes; a game that has 6M registered players worldwide. Now we are complementing that arcade shooter with a core, realistic Battlefield shooter experience that fans have been clamouring for,” said James Salt, Senior Producer, Battlefield Play4Free. “Battlefield Play4Free is for serious shooter fans who are looking for a premium – but free – experience that rivals top console titles.”
Battlefield Play4Free will have the most popular maps from Battlefield 2, with the classes and weapons from the most recent Battlefield: Bad Company 2.
16 vehicles will be included in this free to play game, including helicopters, jet fighters, tanks and lighter armored vehicles.
Players will earn experience for their actions and in-game currency to spend on new weapons or equipment.
If it will follow the same micro-transaction oriented route of Battlefield Heroes, Play4Free will allow players to buy new gear with real life money.
Sadly, EA's inability to properly balance out the free features with the paid ones made Heroes players angry recently.
Hopefully, until Battlefield Play4Free will arrive in Spring of 2011, EA will have time to sort out all of the details.
