Electronic Arts has seen a pretty big change in strategy in the last few years, as it has moved on from exploiting franchises on a yearly basis, like Need For Speed or the sports ones, Madden or FIFA, and has spread its reach to almost all genres of games.

One such category is the free-to-play one, which is rapidly gaining a lot of popularity with the mass market, first of all because, obviously, it is free, and second of all because it offers a great experience in a lot of the cases. EA tasked its DICE studio, makers of the recent Mirror's Edge and the long running Battlefield franchise, to create a game that would be easily accessible to people and could generate profit through in-game micro-transactions.

As such, Battlefield Heroes was born, a fun, cartoonish take on shooter, in the spirit of the very successful Team Fortress 2. The title, although slated to be released last year, was postponed and went into a pretty big revamp process in which the perspective was moved from first to third person and a lot of new features were added.

Now, as quite a lot of time has passed, DICE has just announced that it has opened a closed beta stage of the game to players who subscribe to the website on which Battlefield Heroes can be played. People who want to access this beta will have to visit this sign-up page and log in with their master EA account. After they fill the required fields they will be entered in the database of DICE and will receive a beta key soon.

But don't expect it to arrive the next second as already a lot of people have signed up for this closed beta stage. Hopefully things will go smoothly and we can all get to play this pretty fun game in the near future, whether it is in beta stage or the final free version.
