The development team at DICE and publisher Electronic Arts are dropping a major surprise for fans of Battlefield 4 by launching the much awaited September update for the first-person shooter today, with the 1.16 GB patch now rolling out to users who have the title on the Origin digital distribution service on the PC.

The company also says that the PlayStation 4 gamers will get the update starting at 10:30 AM Greenwich Mean Time, which is 2: 30 AM Pacific Time, while those on the PS3 will have to wait another hour and a half for their own version.

On the Xbox One, the patch will be delivered at 3 PM GMT and 7 AM Pacific Time, and it seems that shortly after that the update for Battlefield 4 will also arrive on the Xbox 360.

The team states on the official Twitter account of the franchise that Battlelog is at the moment also down and that gamers should expect the service to be re-launched in about one hour.

The complexity of the patch might mean that the delivery for the various platforms might also involve some issues with the multiplayer modes, although they should be solved once the changes to the title have been implemented.

Big changes to core mechanics

The September update for Battlefield 4 has been teased since the middle of August and has been created based on the feedback that gamers have been offering via the new Community Test Environment.

Rush, Obliteration, Obliteration Competitive, Capture the Flag and Carrier Assault modes are getting improvements, and players will also notice that the movement of the character models has been changed in order to make it easier to move away from battle without disorienting the player.

The revival mechanics are better and there are more cues for gamers to know when their teammates are ready to get back into the fight.

Weapons and vehicles are now better balanced in Battlefield 4 and gamers will also notice changes to the netcode.

DICE will probably publish a full list of the modifications made to the shooter later today.

The studio is at the moment also working on the final piece of downloadable content pack for Battlefield 4, called The Last Stand, which will take gamers to the Russian-dominated Arctic area and will allow them to use a wide variety of futuristic vehicles and weapons on a currently unknown number of new maps.
