EA's big upcoming first-person shooter, Battlefield 3, won't be able to run on the old Windows XP operating system, at least according to the rendering architect of Battlefield development studio DICE, Johan Andersson.

The DICE representative stated that the Frostbite 2 engine, on which Battlefield 3 would be based, had been primarily developed for the newer DirectX 11 system, supported by the Windows Vista and Windows 7 PC operating systems.

This means that Windows XP, which only supports DirectX 9, won't be able to run the new Battlefield 3, when it is eventually released.

This comes as a serious blow for gamers that were reluctant to upgrade to new operating systems, preferring to stick with XP, which didn't consume as many system resources as Vista or the newest 7 systems.

DICE was rumored to drop XP support for a while now, but the most recent Battlefield title, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, had support for the old PC operating system, although Vista and 7 were in the recommended system requirements.

Battlefield 3 is still in development at EA's DICE studio, and even though a concrete release date has yet to be revealed, the company is planning to ship the new first-person shooter around the end of the year, in order to rival Activision's all but confirmed Call of Duty title.

We already heard that the new Battlefield game wouldn't be targeted purely at consoles, and that the DICE team was working on making the PC edition as solid as possible, with certain aspects of the game tweaked for the platform.

Battlefield's popularity on the PC was confirmed when the players on that platform were the first to reach the 69 million team action milestone in the Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam expansion, thus unlocking the Operation Hastings map.

There have been a few titles that didn't support Windows XP, but Battlefield 3 is by far the biggest as of yet.

Will it make you upgrade to a new operating system? Cast your thoughts below.

I already own a windows 7 computer, just have to upgrade my GPU. I love Battlefield, the only fear companies have is pirated games, which some of us grew it off.

Sure, as long as the game is better than ever, I don't mind upgrading or even buying a new computer. My computer is old anyway. I'll just use my old computer for porn or something.

Of course not. I will not downgrade to a resource hog for any game.

bleh, I don't want to upgrade to Windows 7 for one reason, it takes forever to migrate when you have tons of important files on your PC and games. Then you will probably say just re download your stuff. My answer is not when you have AT&T as your ISP and they limit you to 150 gb's of bandwidth per month, when you're stuck in a monopoly with 2 shoddy ISP's in your area Time Warner Cable and AT&T :(

I'd rather skip a game and not have to put up with all of Vistas and 7s B.S.

Because of this plot to make Micro$oft, Nvidia, and AMD/ATI more money in forcing people to upgrade their computers, While they do a bit of upgrading on their wallets at people's expense, I will PIRATE the game and give it to friends and anyone I know. Choke on that DICE and EA Games.
Next time you decide to launch a game with so called "Better gameplay on DX10 and DX11" While Open GL is more efficient at handling graphics, don't believe me? Look at Apple, they use OpenGL on the Quartz Engine.
Microsoft has sold this beaten horse so many times, But as you know, DX is taking hold. Only because M$ is cornering the market AGAIN, they shove this crap onto developers that tell people "We have no choice, but to develop for the engine" But it's all a plan to get your money every 3 years with "More efficient and better user experience" But they release buggy software that we pay good money for, NO MORE. This is making M$ a monopoly since they started with D3D. Shame they tell developers "You want to make a product for windows? Then you need to build it around this DX Crap, Take it or leave it". Nice, But you can make a difference if you pirate their OS as well, It's the only means of protest we have against such an opressive practice.
