Electronic Arts and DICE have confirmed that a brand new feature will soon appear for Battlefield 3, in the form of the Matches one, which will allow players to create multiplayer sessions with all sorts of customizable settings and invite friends to compete one against another.

Battlefield 3 has been around for quite some time and, despite this, its multiplayer is still quite active, especially with the release of the Close Quarters expansion or the Battlefield Premium bundle, both of which have been quite successful.

Now, DICE has confirmed that a brand new feature will soon be released for Battlefield 3, called Matches, which should allow those who rent servers, the ability to create custom competitions for themselves and their friends.

“The ‘Matches’ feature will allow players to coordinate competitive multiplayer sessions with their friends and squad members. Battlefield 3 players will be able to select the time, server, game settings, and roster for their Matches creating a controlled and definitive environment for competitive play,” the studio said.

“Players will be able to coordinate Matches for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 through the Battlelog. To coordinate a Match a player must be actively renting a dedicated server. Once a dedicated server has been selected the Match host can set the Match name, start time, game mode, team size, and map rotations.”

Matches are completely customizable, according to DICE, as players can choose between settings like “friendly fire, 3D spotting, squad-leader spawning, kill cam, health regeneration, a list of weapon unlocks that will be made available to players, and more.”

After the match ends, players will be able to assess their performance via Battlelog and begin formulating strategies for future rounds.

“With Matches, Battlefield 3 players will be able to create, control, and track directly competitive online play. Platoons, friends, and rivals will be able to put their teamwork to the test in controlled environments laying claim to definitive superiority and creating new grudges,” the studio added.

The Matches feature for Battlefield 3 will receive more details soon, including a release date.
