Battlefield 3 Developer Says Rivals Are Getting Lazy

Swedish studio DICE, the company behind the upcoming Battlefield 3, has revealed that its competitors, including Infinity Ward, the creator of the hugely popular Call of Duty series, are getting lazy and aren't modifying their tools.

Battlefield 3 is powered by an all-new graphics engine, called Frostbite 2, which has seen a stunning video appear a few weeks ago showcasing gameplay from the future first-person shooter.

DICE, as you can imagine, is quite proud of its work, and has just went on the attack against rivals that aren't upgrading their experiences.

"Our competitors are getting lazy," said DICE general manager Karl-Magnus Troedsson. "They're using the same engine, the same recipe for building a game. At some point you need to take that leap. I haven't seen them take that leap since a long time ago. We are doing that now. They had better watch out. We are coming for them."

DICE has said on multiple occasions that Battlefield 3 will effectively be a next-generation game for current-generation platforms.

The executive continued, saying that the new game will deliver an experience with both high and low points, in order to highlight its story, not just an array of high paced shootouts, which aims at distracting players.

"Our competitors keep building very, very high tempo games. We want to tell a story with more drama curves. It's not about pumping round after round for six hours," Troedsson said to OPM via CVG.

Infinity Ward, the studio behind the Call of Duty franchise, Battlefield's biggest rival, has just talked about new technologies a few weeks ago, and said that it is perfectly happy with the engine it's been using since 2005.

The studio assured fans that it is adding new features with each game, and that the experience, while not extremely beautiful, will continue to delight players with future iterations.

Do you think DICE is right with the lazy remarks or is it just trying to hype up its Battlefield 3 ahead of the almost certain huge sales that will be earned by the next Call of Duty game?

I personally am getting sick of CoD, Don't get me wrong, It's a FUN game.. But they need to realize it's JUST A SHOOTER GAME, if they don't start trying to kick up the graphics (one of the only redeemable qualities for such tired storylines) then i'm going to switch to BF completely.

I kind of have to agree with DICE on this one. While I don't think that CoD should scrap their current engine and start over, nor do I dislike CoD(I love it!) I do agree that the CoD games have kind of reached the point of stagnation since Black Ops, not to mention oversaturation from everybody else copying them. All I really have to say is, MW3 is going to need to knock gamers' socks clean off to stack up against forthcoming FPS releases like BF3 and Rage. It's going to need to push the envelope to keep the on-the-fence-people coming back this time around.
