DICE, the developer of the upcoming Battlefield 3 title has revealed that it is ready for a new generation of consoles, especially since its new Frostbite 2 engine is pretty much ready to run on devices like the PlayStation 4 or Xbox 720.

More and more developers and publishers are talking about the next generation of hardware consoles, even if actual manufacturers like Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo aren't even thinking about new devices.

DICE is the latest company to join this effort, saying that it is ready for a new wave of consoles, as Battlefield 3, with its Frostbite 2 engine, is going to push current devices to their limits and prove its worth on the more powerful PCs.

DICE Executive Producer Patrick Bach told CVG that Battlefield 3 will be "if not the best-looking console game this year, up there with the competition," echoing previous statements which said that Battlefield 3 would be a next-generation game for current-generation consoles.

While the upcoming first-person shooter will still appear on current devices, Bach said that the development team is only looking to the future with the title.

"I don't know what the big corporations are thinking but definitely we are desperate to move on into the next generation. I think Battlefield 3 will look like a next-generation game and all the technology we're building, the whole Frostbite 2 system - the animations, audio, everything - is trying to aim for a couple of years in the future, rather than looking at what we have today."

The producer also added that if Microsoft or Sony were to release new platforms, the often-rumored Xbox 720 or PlayStation 4, the Frostbite 2 engine would easily be scaled onto those devices, as DICE made certain to make the technology ready for the next-generation.

"We are already there. If [Microsoft or Sony] were to release a new console tomorrow, the engine would scale onto that platform, because we have been looking at not only the PC technology today but also speculating what will happen tomorrow when it comes to these things. So everything from our streaming technologies [to] rendering technologies is scalable onto future platforms."

Battlefield 3 received a series of three stunning gameplay videos, made on the PC, showcasing just what the new game can do. We still have to wait for its release, however, as the game is scheduled to appear at the end of the year, published by Electronic Arts.
